Backup and Organize Canon Photos in Google Photos

Cannon has been a prominent name in product development since 1955. Not only has Cannon developed astounding camera hardware technologies but it has also worked on software products like image.canon.com. Image.canon provides a simple interface, which can be used to transfer photos directly from your camera to a cloud storage.

Transfer Photos from Canon to Google Photos

There are three main requisites of transferring photos from your Canon camera device to Google Photos.

1. A Stable Internet Connection

In order to transfer files, you must have a stable internet connection, preferably Wi-Fi.

2. A Compatible Canon Camera

If you have a very old camera model, it is possible that you might not be able to transfer files directly. To utilize Image.canon’s features, you require a compatible camera. You can find the list of compatible models here. Examples of compatible cameras include EOS R5/R6 and PowerShot G3 X.

3. Google One Membership

Google One is a subscription that provides additional storage across Google platforms including Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. If you purchase a compatible Canon camera, it will come with one free month of Google One subscription. This will give you access to 100 GB of cloud storage space.

How Does the Transfer Work?

To begin with, you will need to install the Image.canon Android or iOS application on your phone. Then, when you turn on your camera and connect it to the W-Fi, your files will automatically begin to transfer from your camera to the Image.canon cloud account. Good thing is that the quality of your images or videos is not affected at all.

If you want to transfer photos to Google Photos as well, you need to connect your Google Photos account to Image.canon before beginning the transfer. To do so, head to the Settings Menu in Image.canon’s mobile application. Click on “New” under the Connected Web Service section. This will open a new screen displaying a list of web services. If it says “Not Connected” next to Google Photos, click on Connect. If you are not already subscribed to Google One, you will now see a “Join” button that will give you access to one free month of Google One’s membership.

Once you are done with this, you will see a slider saying “Automatically transfer images from camera”. If you turn on this option, all your media files will be automatically transferred to your Google Photos as well. If you are using an Apple phone, you might see an additional step where you have to verify your Canon ID via email.

Transfer Photos from Canon to Google Drive

Transferring files from your camera to Google Drive is very similar to transferring files to Google Photos. Once you go to the settings Menu of your Image.canon application, click on “New” under the Connected Web Service section. If it says “Not Connected” next to Google Drive, click on Connect and login to your Google account if required. Then, just like before, turn on the “Automatically transfer images from camera” option and Image.canon will take care of the rest.

Organize Canon Photos in Google Photos

When you regularly transfer files from your camera to Google Photos, it is likely that the photos in your collection might get jumbled up. To avoid this, you can try a few things.

1. Create Albums

After uploading images to Google Photos, try to sort them out into different albums. The best and most common way would be to sort out pictures or videos from different occasions into different albums. For example, all pictures or videos from your high school graduation can go into one album titled “Graduation” while the ones from your summer vacation in Paris can go into another album titled “Paris”. This will make it easier for you to trace back photos when you want to revisit your memories later.

2. Add Favorites

Some memories are always more precious than others. If you have any particular photos that are closer to your heart than others, you can add them to your Favorites by clicking on the star icon you see in the preview mode. This will put the particular photo/video in a separate Favorites album/section in your Google Photos so that you can easily revisit these memories whenever you wish.

3. People & Pets

Did you know that Google’s intelligent computer vision algorithms can automatically identify faces in photos? The face detection model works not only with human faces but also with pets! When we upload photos to Google Photos, it automatically sorts out different people or pets into different albums. If you click on the Search Bar, you will see icons with faces of different people/pets. If you click on any of these icons, you will see all photos of that particular person or pet. This feature could come in handy if you ever want to look for photos of a particular person, for example on your friend’s birthday.

Canon’s and Google’s partnership has just begun. Image.canon is just one step towards a smoother cross-platform transfer experience. As claimed by Canon, there’s much more to come. We are definitely excited to see what Google and Canon have in store for us!
