Find Lookalike or Similar Photos in OneDrive

Did it ever happen to you, while you’re simply in the midst of uploading photos to your OneDrive account, that all of a sudden you get a notification pop up which states that you can’t add any more photos because you have run out of space on your cloud account? And this comes as a rude shock to you because as per your understanding, you have utilized very little space on your account and expect most of it to be free. What now?

Product Spotlight (OneDrive Duplicates): Use Cloud Duplicate Finder to remove 1000s of duplicates on OneDrive cloud, completely online.

Cloud Duplicate Finder is a web-service by our company, Sorcim Technologies. It helps people in removing duplicates completely online from the cloud drives. Use it and share your thoughts with us.

Sadly, OneDrive doesn’t contain any special algorithms to detect similar images and users must figure out a way to take stock of such irritants on their own and clean them up.

Another cause of concern is that similar photos come into existence due to multiple factors. Suppose you clicked a photo through your phone and added it right away to OneDrive. Shortly after, you clicked another picture and added this to OneDrive as well! Now, this is where things get messy. You have two photos of the same object/ thing in OneDrive, causing disorganization as well as wastage of storage space, and worse of all you aren’t even aware of this situation and will be caught off guard sometime in the future when you will be served the drive full notification!

Now, in order to avoid such a scenario, you will have to either locate similar photos in OneDrive and then delete them manually or use a software to auto-detect and delete them all.

Wish the second option was possible? Your wish has already been granted.

Use PictureEcho

This is a simple, yet highly effective way to get rid of similar photos, whether they’re located your computer’s hard drive or any cloud service such as OneDrive (with a little more effort). Just download and install PictureEcho onto your system. Next up:

    1. Sync OneDrive to your computer.
    1. Launch PictureEcho and add OneDrive to the target scan area via the Add Path button.

      Select the local OneDrive folder
    1. Click the Similarity Setting button to select your preferred mode from 4 different options that are available.
    1. Click Start Search to initialize the scan.

      Launch the scan!
    1. As the scan gets over, you will notice scan results populate the PictureEcho user interface.
    1. Choosing the files manually is certainly an option, but it can be a big ask if the number of files runs beyond a few dozens. You can click the Select Duplicates button in the footer to choose which kind of duplicates (or rather similar images) you want to retain.
    1. For all the remaining photos, click Select Action and opt for either permanently deleting the images or moving them to a folder of your choice.
  1. Wait for the changes to be replicated to your OneDrive account.

How to Avoid Similar Images in OneDrive?

Similar images will occur due to many reasons. And it is almost a given that they will see the light of the day on someday in the future. However, you can avoid this eventuality to a greater extent (if not completely) provided you are more diligent with keeping your data organized and use PictureEcho occasionally to sweep away any occasional similar images that might have evaded you and landed somehow into your OneDrive.
