Almost every single one of us possesses a computer\/ laptop that contains anywhere between a modest to a gigantic number of duplicates stashed on the hard disk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you are a professional photographer, a big-time selfie lover, someone who is too big in computer graphics or even a casual snap lover who captures several dozen images, there is every likelihood that your photos collection comprises of duplicate images. These duplicates occupy valuable storage space on your <\/span><b>DSLR<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s memory card, the computer\u2019s hard disk and even the cloud storage service you use to back up the images. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will have to step up and take matters in your hands. There are various ways you can take corrective action to clean up these pesky duplicate images.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>The Manual Way to Delete Duplicate and Similar Images<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This method requires the user to do some manual work, determine the duplicates and kill them off. Firstly, you might want to tinker with the indexing options and then we will switch to the search.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those of you who don\u2019t know, <\/span><b>Indexing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forms an index of the overall contents( files as well as folders) located on the hard drive. This procedure is designed to speed up searches, and the results are very positive. Strangely enough, sometimes the computer launches the indexing operation even when the computer is in use, and diverts valuable resources from where the user requires them. This leads to an overall slowdown, and the user suffers. You can either turn off indexing completely if you don\u2019t perform searches that often, or you can even limit the indexing operation to include only those file types(e.g. images) which you frequently search (<\/span><b>Windows 7<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> onwards). This way you will save up all the lag caused by all the indexing performed in locations which you don\u2019t need to search.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you simply need to disable indexing for a hard drive:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right-click the hard drive in <\/span><b>My Computer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/ <\/span><b>This PC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and select <\/span><b>Properties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now simply uncheck the checkbox for <\/span><b>Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and restart your computer to apply the changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need to disable indexing for a file\/ folder:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right-click the file\/ folder, and select <\/span><b>Advanced<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the <\/span><b>General<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tab.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now uncheck the checkbox for <\/span><b>Allow this file to have contents indexed in addition to file properties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/ <\/span><b>Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as applicable).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> | <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and restart your computer to apply the changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you limit indexing to select file types, here is what you need to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click the <\/span><b>Start<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> menu, type in <\/span><b>index<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and select <\/span><b>Indexing Options<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><b>Advanced<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then select the <\/span><b>File Types<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tab in the next window.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you can happily select (and deselect) file types, depending on your requirements. Also, select the radio box for <\/span><b>Index Properties and File Contents<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><b>OK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> | <\/span><b>Close<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and restart your computer to apply the changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Navigate to a drive which you think contains duplicate images buried somewhere. Now we must first adjust the view as well as the results layout so that we can easily spot duplicates once we launch the search. To do so:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Press <\/span><b>Ctrl<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> + <\/span><b>F1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to bring up the <\/span><b>Ribbon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interface.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><b>View<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tab) | <\/span><b>Preview pane<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>Current view<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> category, click <\/span><b>Group by<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> | <\/span><b>Name<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the final step, click <\/span><b>Details<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the <\/span><b>Layout<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> category.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you will get search results that will be arranged alphabetically, show up attributes such as name, type, size etc. You will also be getting a preview to make matters easier for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply click the <\/span><b>Search Box<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (just next to the address bar), and type in these keywords (one by one) to bring up relevant results.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.jpg<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_342\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-342\" src=\"http:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-768x592.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-1024x789.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1-80x62.jpg 80w, https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/image1.jpg 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\"><strong>Searching for jpg images via File Explorer<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.jpeg<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.png<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.gif<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you can easily compare the image previews, spot all duplicates and use the <\/span><b>Ctrl<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> +<\/span><b>Click<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combination (to select items in a non-sequential way) or <\/span><b>Shit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> + <\/span><b>Click<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (to select items in a sequence), and press <\/span><b>Delete<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get rid of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Automated Way<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other and more comprehensive way is to use a software program. <\/span><b>Clone Files Checker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is designed to look out for duplicate images (and all other file types) by carrying out a powerful and speedy scan. It does not rely on the file name at all and minutely examines the file contents. Click the <\/span><b>Show Preview<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> button and you will get a preview for each image (similar to the <\/span><b>Windows<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> search method).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can opt to manually select the images if they are not that big in numbers. Alternatively, click <\/span><b>Select Duplicates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and choose an option of your liking to signal which kind of images from each duplicate group you want to retain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, click <\/span><b>Select Action<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and make your choice between permanently deleting the duplicate images or moving the duplicates to a separate folder.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job done, a significant number of duplicate images have been removed safely and you have freed up some storage space for more productive uses.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Duplicate files are a reality, and they are here to stay.
