This guide shows how to find and remove duplicates from the Mac Photos app safely, using a dedicated album so you stay in control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Let PictureEcho read your Photos library (with your permission).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Run a duplicate scan and see which photos are duplicates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Send only the duplicate photos into a single album in Photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delete those photos yourself inside Photos, so nothing is removed without you confirming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PictureEcho for Mac does not delete anything from your library. It only gathers duplicates into one album. After that, PictureEcho can use this library for scanning. You may need to grant this only once per library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2: Run the Duplicate Scan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With your Photos library selected, choose how strict the duplicate detection should be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar \u2013 finds near-duplicates (e.g. same shot with small edits). Use the slider to adjust sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exact \u2013 finds only pixel-identical copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Click Scan (or Start Scan). PictureEcho reads the catalog and finds duplicate groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wait for the scan to finish. It only adds the chosen photos to a single album in the Mac Photos app. You will delete them yourself in the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Click Fix Duplicates.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read the confirmation: the selected photos will be added to an album named \u201c<strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Duplicates by PictureEcho<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u201d in the Apple Photos app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If macOS asks for Photos library permission (e.g. \u201cPictureEcho would like to add photos to your library\u201d), allow it so the app can create the album and add the photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Confirm. PictureEcho creates the album (if needed) and adds the selected duplicate photos to it. When it\u2019s done, you\u2019ll see a success message reminding you to open Photos and delete the photos from that album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your main library and other albums are unchanged; the duplicates now also appear in one place: Duplicates by PictureEcho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 5: Delete Duplicate Photos Mac<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actual removal happens in the Photos app, so you can double-check before anything is deleted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open the Photos app on your Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the sidebar, find and open the album \u201cDuplicates by PictureEcho\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-4-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-4-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-4-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-4-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-4-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/pictureecho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-4.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the album, choose Edit \u2192 Select All (or \u2318A) to select every photo in that album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delete the selected photos (e.g. Image \u2192 Delete [X] Photos, or right\u2011click \u2192 Delete [X] Photos). Confirm when Photos asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Do not delete the album itself else your duplicates will remain in photos app. Delete only the photos inside it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you delete those photos, they are removed from your library and from any other albums they were in. Your library is smaller and the duplicates pictures on Mac are gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why Use an Album Instead of Deleting Directly?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Safety:<\/strong> Nothing is deleted until you do it in Photos. You can open the album and change your mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Control: <\/strong>You see exactly which photos are in the album before deleting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Clarity: <\/strong>One place (\u201cDuplicates by PictureEcho\u201d) shows everything that was marked for removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows the same idea as moving files to Trash: review first, then delete duplicate pictures on Mac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Quick Recap<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Permission \u2013 Give PictureEcho access to your Photos Library (file picker and, if asked, Photos permission).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scan \u2013 Run a duplicate scan (Similar or Exact) and wait for results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Review \u2013 Open duplicate groups and adjust which photo to keep in each group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fix Duplicates \u2013 Add the chosen photos to the album \u201cDuplicates by PictureEcho\u201d in the Photos app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delete in Photos \u2013 Open that album in Photos, Select All, delete the photos (not the album).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After that, the duplicates are removed from your Mac Photos library and you\u2019ve done it all yourself, step by step.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Duplicate photos take up space and make your library harder to browse.
